    • To date I have always made changes to my live site. for instance if I install a new template, or component I will work with my live site.

I am now thinking that I should not be doing this.

So my question is. How should I make changes to my site. Is there a way of copying my live site onto my PC, make the changes and then move it back to the hosted server?

What is the best approach. If you could also tell me what software is recommended I would appreciate it.

      Thanks

    • google WAMP for a windows machine.

Its a virtual server that runs on your local computer.

Later you can transfer the files over via ftp. You may have to rework urls and other things a bit to change the http://localhost addresses to the "live" addresses.

    • OK so I load a windows virtual server onto my home computer and transfer my live site onto my home computer.

I then make changes that I want to the site and then transfer everything back to the host server.

Is it easier to transfer the site back and forth using a program like Joomla Ghost or Joomla cloner? If one of these is used does it take care of the live site issue you spoke of?

      Thanks

    • You can transfer the files ok, but for it to run, you have to have Apache, MySQL and PHP running on your computer. Thats what WAMP does.

Now, here's an alternative to doing that...

Dreamweaver allows one to establish an FTP connection to your files. Then say, if you want to edit the index.php for your template... when you save your changes, it saves it on the server and then you can instantly see your changes in a browser.

If you do not have dreamweaver, here is a FREE alternative that is VERY GOOD!
