Not nice at all to be rubbishing Dreamhost when it is unlikely they are wrong in this case.

Whoa hoss. Save the lecture. I haven't rubbished anyone. I simply said my experience with them had been a nightmare and that's a fact.

This issue is downtime which they blame on "network problems". They've put out numerous announcements on their site apologizing and promising to do better. Yet, the problems persist. The outages have been going on for over a month now. I've never received any indication that my bandwidth or space was an issue.

    • My experience with Siteground has been almost all positive. When I have posted a support ticket, which is how they communicate, they almost always respond right away -- 15 minutes or less. Occasionally, the initial response is not completely responsive, or not the clearest. When I have asked for clarification, I have gotten clear answers, right away. They really want to help. Their tutorials are very good -- not as good as RocketTheme's tutorials, of course.

Siteground offers a free Joomla site migration from any other hoster. They will say that it takes a week, but mine was done in a couple of days.

Altogether, I'd give them an A.

    • I've been with few different hosting companies (for shared packages).

Lypha.com totally bad especially for joomla. Many functions are not working properly. Downtime every now and then. The support is also bad. Not to mention they own the DNS we register through them at the registration for the hosting :(

Hostmonster.com - Good support, but server is slow.

Vodahost.com - performance is ok, support is good, but they are just rather slow in updating their fantastico.

      Siteground.com? Never use it... sorry.

    • hey guys,

i was directed here by nang (from an old topic on media temple)

i to have never used siteground,

but if your looking for a new host i would reccomend mediatemple

i am on there grid service it costs $20 a month, and ill tell you the pros and cons ive noticed

      PROS
doesnt use Cpanel (i believe it uses a modified version of plesk, but im not sure)
very little downtime (if there has been any i havnt seen it)
no permission issues (ive yet to come accross the dreaded joomla permission issues with this host)
      alot of space and bandwidth
you can set up other users on your cpanel

      CONS
doesnt use Cpanel (takes some getting used to if its your first time )
slow support (couple of days if your lucky - luckily i have only had to use it twice)
need to use ssh to unpack zip files (not really a con but still)
the other users you have set up can see billing details
you can only have one MYSQL user and one password (unless you pay more a month)

i was on iipanel for a year and a half before MT

      PROS
      there cheap
excellent support (couple of hours tops usually)

      CONS
lots of downtime (atleast once a week)
dont tell you when maintenance is due (just shut it down)

      hope that helps you out

what was the problem with dreamhost? are you on shared hosting? 5000 uniques a day would definitely kill a heavy website, and you might be slamming dreamhost when they aren't to blame ???

Problem = Downtime. Constantly down lately.
Shared hosting = Yes. It's a phpbb board. Nothing fancy. It's the only site on my dreamhost account.

I was in Dreamhost(nightmarehost) for a year and it sucks, constant downtime of httpserver/mysqlserver and slow connection. I'm changing this month to mediatemple.net or lunarpages.com.

    • I've used Siteground, and lasted a whole 4 months before I couldn't take any more.

My site was down several times a day (without any compensation for failure to maintain their guaranteed up time, mind you). When you're trying to get something done and have to use it almost every day, their ticket system becomes infuriating and there is no other way to contact customer support. No phone, no email... just the ticket system. They kept telling me that they were moving me to a faster development server where I would definitely not see the issues I was seeing, but they didn't do it. They told me they were upgrading my server, and I never saw any difference. They gave me a lot of lip service and got my site running again, usually pretty quickly - but within a few hours I was down again. They actually told me at one point that it's because I have too many links on my frontpage. (!)

Their service responses were fast on site down reports, but they had a limited number of ways to report other issues, and most of the things (other than site down) that I encountered didn't fall into any of their categories. The ones that did, it was no 15 minutes for a response... more like 4 or 5 hours, or longer.

I realize that I may well be an exception, but in my case - I certainly got what I paid for. I was constantly frustrated until I moved, and I have been down once in the last 4 months since moving to another host.
