How to work on a new template without being live

Posted 12 years 8 months ago
    • There must be an easy way to do this, but how can one work on upgrading to a different template without having to do it live? There's so much work involved to get many of RT's templates functioning properly that it's impractical to do it on a live, existing installation.

      Any tips would be appreciated.

    • well you can either use your local machine using XAMPP or WAMP for windows or MAMP for MAC.

Or you can use a subdirectory on your hosting account.

Then use akeeba backup to make a copy of the site when you are ready to take it live.

    • Exactly what cd stated.

I personally work on XAMPP because it is a very simple process to get the dev site live in a 'as is' status.

    • Whichever you choose, make sure that you have the same settings, user rights and software versions as the live server.

    • Thanks all. I've never been able to get XAMPP to work, but I'll try again.

Then I would assume you simply upload it all to the root of the site on the server?

if you use Akeeba backup to make a copy of the site then you can follow the well documented method to deploy the Akeeba Backup archive of the site on a live server.
