Easier way to download updates? e.g. FTP?

Posted 12 years 4 months ago
    • Hi!

I'm searching for other more efficient ways to download updated templates etc... other than the clicking on the download buttons, just found a lot of Joomla FTP functionality related questions and posts.

Is there an FTP site or some other method for downloading updates more efficiently?

      Thanks!
      Kevin

    • Hi, no there is not. The download buttons on the website are the only way. We have this method in place to prevent non-members from accessing the downloads and only allow access to paying current members of our club, all the memberships are kept track of through our website.
    • The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

    • When I found this topic with a search, I was hoping for a positive answer. With the size of Lumiere and its videos, I would greatly appreciate a method of downloading future templates directly to my web server, rather than down to my desktop first.

I have cPanel, WHM and SSH access on the web server. Is there a way for me to do what I want?

      Thanks

    • We cannot provide that kind of access at this time. Providing a server connection that can verify the users are club members is not easily accomplished, and our current system handles this through user accounts created on our website. You may be familiar with how this system works if you are a Joomla user, as not surprisingly, that is what we use for our website and accounts.

Downloadable files accessed through our website while logged into your account is the only method for obtaining our products we can offer at this time.

    • Forgot to mention - once the files are on your computer, you can SSH them the exact same way you would from a server. If you're having issues with an upload limit on your cPanel or hosting account backend, FTP is a perfectly acceptable solution as the limit generally refers to what can be done in the interface - not through other methods.

If there was a hard file size limit put in place by your host, you would have the same issue regardless of where the files are coming from. If that was the case, there would not be anything we could do to change it.

Having to upload files is part of building a website, if you're doing a lot work on the web it's something you'll always have to do.

    • Hosting limits are not the issue. Because I often work from a mobile computer, which has metered bandwidth, avoiding the need to download files to the mobile computer PLUS upload them to the web server is what I am talking about. The hosting limits are far more than sufficient, but the nearly 100 MB file size of Lumiere (with videos) has raised my concerns about the metered mobile bandwidth.

I'm trying to figure out a way to SSH into my web server and run a minimal Linux web browser that can handle the RocketTheme web page, log in and allow me to click the download button to download directly to my web server.

I suspect that this ability would be popular with a large number of RT customers in a similar situation. This is one of those functions that will cause people to wonder why we didn't find the easier way a long time ago.

    • I understand your situation, but it is one that we have no control over. The methods in which our members work is not a factor we can take into consideration in most cases. If there was a solution I could provide I certainly would, but there is no way to accommodate this currently.

There have been a number of members stating the files were too large to upload via cPanel, that is why I mentioned that.

It may be worth considering that our service is set up the way it is so that we may manage all aspects of it in a way that suits our business and the majority of our members. I think I can safely say that no matter how we do things, not everyone will agree with the methods. There will always be individual needs and requests that we cannot accommodate no matter what the situation may be.

    • I understand that RocketTheme may not be able to help, right now. I posted in the General Discussion forum so that other users who might be more knowledgeable about such functionality than I am might chime in as well. If we can find a solution that is easily done, then many may benefit.
