    • Hi,

I don't know if the title is the best for my issue.
I have a Joomla 1.5 website with Maelstrom template. I decided to rebuild the website with Metropolis and J 3.0.
Until the new website will be ready the old one should be working.
My question is if it's ok to to create a folder where I will install J 3.0 with Metropolis and work on it offline. When ready I will move the old one in another folder and move the contents with J 3.0 in public_html.
Please let me know if my idea is ok and then I can start the work
      Thanks!

    • Yes, that is how I would do it. And I would use Akeeba backup for site migration from one folder to another. It might look like overkill but that way you will save yourself lots of troubles

    • Hi Catrinel,

The idea is ok but I would usually do this...

Create sub-domain on site using cpanel.
      Create new database and user.
Upload zipped RocketLauncher (gives me all demo stuff and extensions) to the sub-domain.
Use cpanel file manager to extract zip file.
Browse to sub-domain and carry out installation.
Do work - add content - test - etc.

      Then when ready to move.

Backup live site (download a copy for safe keeping).
Do test restore to sub-directory to make sure back up works.
If OK - delete all files from live site EXCEPT the sub-domain (make sure you keep the backup!).
Use Akeeba backup to create backup of sub-domain.
Copy back up file to public directory (where old site was)
Load kickstart.php to same directory and browse to it to install the backup.

This way keeps the directories and paths correct. I have also used sub-directory and then used cpanel file manager to move all folders and files and then edit configuration.php to correct paths. That also works.

Golden rule is take a backup of live site and make sure you can restore from it.

      Hope this helps 8)

    • Thank you both for the very complex and useful answers. I will follow your advice. Probably soon I will be posting under Metropolis
Wish me desire to work as I will need it. It's my own website for dogs and I will enjoy rebuilding it but it will take lots of time and energy.
I will mark the subject as solved. If you find a better title for this topic please feel free to change it as it may be useful for other users too.
