New Site - extensions choices - Help?

Hello -- I am a newbie and am throwing together my first Joomla! site (well, I did a lame one a year ago that doesn't count).
What I am creating is an affiliate marketing site. My client will be selling other peoples' stuff and re-routing buyers to the sellers' sites. So my first thought was to use something like VirtueMart, and rather than "Add to Cart", the button would route people to the other sites' carts? I want to handle this with an extensive database that could sort products by price and color and type, etc. Then have dynamic pages that could automatically post "this week's best deal" based on certain criteria... stuff like that.
Any help or thoughts on where to start? Oh, yeah, and I would love to come out of the gate with v1.5 - I would hate to have to learn 1.0 just to upgrade in a few months.
