  • SOLVED New install and no menu items link to pgs - 404

    • I installed a Chapelco with Rocketlauncher_j25 to make sure everything was setup correctly. All seemed in its place at first. Unfortunately, none of my menu items will link to selected articles. I get 404 for all. I even created a new test menu item and new test page to link it to and published them both, but nothing. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • I guess you enabled SEF URLs in global config but you didn't rename "htaccess.txt" file under Joomla root folder to ".htaccess" 8)

      I do have SEF URLs enabled (it was on by default) and I changed the htaccess.txt to .htaccess. I looked into it a bit more and discovered I needed to turn on "Use URL rewriting". I did that, then added the .htaccess again and still same result. It actually goes to 404 page a lot faster. When I turn off SEF URLs the menu does work. So that's good, but not a good solution.

    • OK. I checked your site. Since you are still not using domain name setting SEF URLs to on won't work. Once you actually set your domain and access web site with domain name instead of username on your hosting server, SEF URLs will work correctly.

      BTW, SEF URLs should be the last thing you would enable on the developed web site anyway 8)

      What about all the internal content links (not menu) I create while site is being stage before redirecting DNS to go live? Do I have to go back at that point and change them all manually to get better seo links for each?

    • You should use relative links instead of absolute links and when you enable SEF urls, Joomla will handle them correctly.

      For example, if you need to link something to the "Fiberglass Pool Fence" use the following relative link
      index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2

      instead of absolute link which would contain your hosting username
      http://vm1688.sgvps.net/~protecta/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=109
