Different stretching bg on one side than the other?

    • I am working on a site using the free Novus theme (though I am a RocketTheme member) and have run into a snag. With most sites, when you have the content centered, you usually want the background to be the same on both sides. In this case, I made the left side bar have a nice gradient down the page, and the main content on the right will be white, with a drop shadow coming out from under it. This is all doable, but I want the white to extend out to the right so that you never see the gradient that's extending off to the left side of the site. Think of it as two distinct columns, a small fixed size column on the left with a gradient background that stretches left to fill up space, and a large fixed column on the right that has a white background, with a white background that stretches off to the right to fill up the extra space. Well, okay, it would actually be 3 columns if you count the separator, which will appear as a drop shadow cast out from under the white column onto the gradient background, but that could be a part of the left column I suppose.

Does this make sense? I need a centered fixed sized page, with the portion that expands outward from the fixed area to be DIFFERENT on each side of the page.

I figure this is a CSS/Layout knowledge issue, meaning I just simply don't have the knowledge needed to do this.

      Thanks!
