J! 1.5 Vs. J! 1.0?

  • J! 1.5 Vs. J! 1.0?

    • Hello all! I'm just starting out with Joomla, and I was wondering if it was better to use 1.5 or 1.0.13? I downloaded 1.5 initially, but I've been encountering all sorts of issues with things like undefined PHP functions in extensions that other users seem not to be encountering, also, I've noticed that there seems to be a little more support with 1.0. It could just be my perception, well, and the fact that 1.0 has been around longer.. but for someone starting a new site is it better to bite the bullet and use 1.5, or would it be better to use 1.0?

      Thanks all

    • I think you will find a lot more preferences for 1.0 simply because its been around so much longer. Myself, I have tried to load and configure 1.5 twice over the past two months and abandoned both projects for a variety of reasons. Basically for me a lot of things I thought should work out of the box did not.

I will probably revisit it though when it gets to totally stable releases and conversions from 1.0 is easier.....who knows when that will be...

    • I've installed it twice.. once on the main site, and once on the test server. What I found when installing extensions is that I have to test EVERYTHING before I pollute the main site with the module/component/plugin. Anyway, I'm trying to set up 1.0 on my test server now and I'm going to compare the two.

The conversion is what scares me. I used to run Drupal, and they went from 5.4 to 6.0, and 100% of the site did not work.. granted 6.0 is still a beta (like 1.5), but the bugger is that they changed the API. Anyway, given my past history with Drupal, I am more than a little concerned about updates.. My initial thought was just to go for 1.5, but now I think I might be better off with 1.0..

We'll see after the test :)

      Thanks

    • Ok, after installing, setting up and mostly re-implementing the stuff that I did on 1.5, I can say that I think that 1.0.13 is a better choice for the site, albeit, MUCH less intuitive to sue the 1.5. I've had none of the problems that I had with 1.5, and it seems as though everything is coming together. I just have to re-learn J! now, but, I guess it's all worth the effort!

      Thx,

    • I am thinking about converting my site to 1.5....sometime. The first thing that crosses my mind is database compatability. Can I export a 1.0 database and import it into 1.5. I think all web hosts have the ability to download a SQL database as a backup and then do a restore of the SQL backup. If there are table incompatibilites is there a "upgrade tool" that can fix the database for 1.5 compatability and then Restore it in a new 1.5 Joomla install.

If this was possible, I think I would go with 1.013 and then hope that this method would help with the Copy Paste of most of the the static content. Is this a feasable approach.

      Thanks
      Rob
