Internal 500 Error

    • Good morning Joomla Forum, well maybe not for me.

I woke up this morning to see my site, mikesilva.gothamsportsmedia.com having the following error

Error 500 - Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
      Please try again later.

I've read through the forum already and tried the renaming the .htaccess back to htaccess.txt but nothing.

How/why would this happen? No work or updates have been done on the site. The site was up and working yesterday...

BTW I can get to the backend, just the homepage not up.

      Thanks for the help

    • a 500 error suggests it is a server issue - can you check your logs? if you dont have access or cant - ask your host to be a little more specific with exactly what the problem is

as its a sub-domain of your main - have you made any changes to your htaccess file on the main domain?

    • Thanks for getting back to me.

My host said it was the joomla application because the databases for both the main and sub looked good.

No changes to the main have been made in over a month.

Now on Thursday I added OpenSEF to the sub, but again had no problems until Friday night.

Since then, I've removed OpenSEF and turned off SEO in the global Config.

      I also changed the.htaccess to htaccess.txt

But still get the same errors...

      Thanks again for looking.

---Does this look like something where I'd have to re-install Joomla, and if I do that, how will it affect the site?

    • i may be wrong here but i think your sub domain (where you're having the problem) will be controlled by the htaccess of your main domain .. so as you've turned off the sef url's i'd try turning them back on in your sub domain

    • Hoping now that the weekend is over that one of the great experts in here can take a look and see why this is still happening even after all the great advice...

    • unfortunately mike, 500 errors are produced by the server. You will need to look in the webserver log if you have access to them (or have your hosting provider look), because it's not possible to diagnose the issue from the error page alone. The issues could be many, but most likely it's realted to your SEF and the htaccess. If that file is messed up at all, it will definitely throw a 500 error.
