How do I save htaccess.txt file as .htaccess ?

I am trying to learn Open Sef. According to tutorials, I need to save htaccess.txt file as .htaccess .
I opened (downloaded and opened) htaccess.txt file save it as
file name: .htaccess
encoding: UTF -8
but I lost access to my site both from backend and frontend. I guess i change the file name incorrectly.Anyone knows how to do this? - Last Edit: 17 years 2 months ago by Bob Ateah.

just put the decimal point at the begining of the filename and remove the period and anything else at the end.
The filename should be able to be changed by right mouse clicking the filename and choose rename.
