Database n demo site question and saying hi. :)

Posted 17 years 2 months ago
    • Well first off I just joined the RT club not long ago I'm loving it the templates are absolutely amazing so I thought I'de stop in and say hi to everyone.

I have a few questions.. originally I was just going to post this first one on the Joomla forums, but when I click on the forums a password box pops up and says.. why would you want to look at the past..? lol iono so may as well post here^^

My first question is related to making a database type website I'm going to use Versatility because it expands to full width which I like for my envisioned website. I've looked all over at Joomla extensions etc... and I'm looking for somthing to use to make a database website with. Virtuemart would be nice it has categories, sub-categories, places for pictures for my database etc, but its way to made for the buying part. I'de love to create a website like this ffxi.allakhazam.com/ I run a gamer based community site and a database sister site to go hand n hand would be really great. So does anyone have any suggestions of maybe some specific plugins, extensions, etc that would really make my life easier creating a site like this?

My second question is a bit more simple. I would like to create a website/portfolio demo in the future similar to RTs demo or any other demo there is out there. How difficult is it to do that?

Thanks for your time guys! Take care :)

    • Regarding your second question!

I thinks it is not matter of difficulty, will be matter of time. After you master Joomla, the creation pf a Demo Portfolio (site), will be
      easy for you.

Regarding your First question, Well there is many of components than can help you!

      Check out:

labs.rockettheme.com/  ; this will give you the idea of a gamer site using some of the RT Templates.

      visit also :

      extensions.joomla.org/

To see which extensions may be of help. It will be a matter of trying them to see if they feet your necessities
Let's say Community Builder ( to manage user), JCE to edit content, Docman for Repository, PHPBB3 or fireboard for forums, a banner rotator for your images, Jreviews, Sobi2, etc., and some other to get a better user control.

      Good luck!

I have the exact same questions. So can anyone lay out the steps in the process to achieve this?

    • Uhm... to be honest, I'm not really sure, what you are talking about... what do you mean by "a database-site"? Actually Joomla is a Database-based System and there are loads of native Possibilities to i.E. let you publish Articles and Blogs and then List them by Section/Category and whatnot...
Maybe you should first read up on Joomla's native Features, such as Sections and Categories, Articles, Blog-Listings and so on. You'll find some manuals over at joomla.org and tons of howto's on Google.

If I understand you correctly, you want to make up some Kind of News-Site, that's split up like: (just as an Example):

      +- PC-News
      +- Gaming News
      +- Hardware News
      +- XBox-News
      +- Gaming News
      +- Xbox live

and create corresponding Articles in these (and then have Overview-Pages for each Section/Category with the latest X items, maybe show some on the Frontpage etc.), right?
This is all possible in Joomla without any Extensions...

Those Demo-Sites are usually made up of several Joomla-Installations in Subdirectories and a simple Frameset with the "Navigation-Bar" in a small Frame and the Joomla-Installations from the Subdirectories opening in the other Frames. So - as you can imagine - it's a lot of work to set up all these Joomla-Installations, but it's not "difficult".
