Possibly a permission problem

  • Possibly a permission problem

Posted 17 years 2 months ago
    • A client that I built a joomla site for using simplix has other domain names on same host all in root directory eg /public_html/xxx.
The problem is all the files for the other domains are just htm documents with the domain name not in folders in this directory also.
He has always used frontpage to edit these files and now he cannot as he is blocked by I am assuming the Joomla install and security.
      Any solutions?

    • This seems like a simple permissions thing like you suggested. I would check to see what the permissions are and make sure the directory that he is saving them to is set at 777. If you find that the folders are set at the right settings then check each of the individual files, because it is possible to have a folder set to one thing and the files set to another.

    • He has about 25 htm pages that relate 2 3 different domains non of which are in folders to reflect their domain but just in the same directory as the main joomla installation.
So if I change all these file permissions to 777 will that help

    • I am not 100% sure on this, usually changing all the files to 777 will sometimes cause an error. Most servers now have a special setup that if you chmod to 777 it will cause errors on scripts. (Including Joomla) - CHMOD 755 would be a better choice, although this seems weird since that this has just started happening since you installed Joomla. At this point it is a guessing game, so I would not say that chmod'ing would fix or not fix. But to me, it seems more like an .htaccess or php.ini issue. Depending on your server you can have a php.ini in each individual folder. Some more information may be needed to assist with this problem.

Try including some additional information like, a link to the Joomla site, a link to some of the other sites, maybe your current .htaccess file (if exists)...

      Good Luck...

    • Just as a Sidenote: is there any possibility to convince your client not to use Frontpage anymore? Frontpage is a Major P.I.T.A.. The Results produced by FP are a hit in the face for anybody, who ever tried to follow w3c-rules and the "html" it outputs is a Major Mess (1 word: Microsoft), not to mention that it senselessly slows down loading-times and Searchengines HATE it.
I guess, the reason for him not to be able to upload from Frontpage anymore is, that the Frontpage-Extensions (sheesh - show me another Company that can be so ignorant, to demand specific Extensions from Hosters, just to be able to upload ::) ) are probably messed up. Contact your Hosting-Provider and have him check these Extensions before you start poking around with permissions ;)

    • He has used frontpage for years he says. Will have to convince him to get me to redo the other sites :D or suggest some other program for him to edit the files for the other domains

    • Adobe Dreamweaver (CS3) rocks ;)
It produces very nice and clean HTML, has tons of Features, is far less complicated than Frontpage for handling File-Uploads/-Synchronization and even Supports Plugins for creating nice Stuff like animated Menus and whatnot ;)

I probably found the reason for your Frontpage-Problem by the way:
Frontpage needs an .htaccess File as well - you probably overwrote it, when installing Joomla, since Joomla-SEF is handled by .htaccess too. If that's the case, ask your Hoster to restore the old .htaccess (should be on a backup hopefully) and be sure to turn off SEF in Joomla, before he restores the old File.
If you are sure, that you did not overwrite a .htaccess-File, the Problem is probably, that .htaccess inherits it's directives to all subdirectories unless told otherwise.
You can easily test this by turning off SEF in Joomla, then renaming the .htaccess-File to "htaccess.txt" and then have your Client test, if Frontpage works again.
If that works, google for ".htaccess +inherit" and try to turn off inheriting for the subdirectories, that hold the Frontpage-Stuff. Worst case would be, that you'll have to run Joomla without SEF.
