Dual Install of MixxMag templates-w & wo sample data?

Posted 16 years 3 months ago
    • I just finished reading another thread where one of the expert advised loading TWO versions of the template...one WITH the sample data, and one WITHOUT the sample data. The reasoning was that it becomes cumbersome to work around the sample data and that time can be saved by doing this.

I'm just beginning to get my site going using the sample data, and I AM having trouble working around it. I'd like to save myself time and effort, so I am thinking of doing a reinstall as recommended.

If I decide to do this, I'm not sure how to follow the expert's advise. I could load the version WITH the sample data onto my local server, and put the version WITHOUT the sample data onto my server. Would that be the best way to go? Do I really need the sample data at this point? It seems that just the online demo and info might be enough. I'd sort of like to build on the fly to save myself some time.

If I decide to do this, and want to load the program without the sample data, do I just unload my Joomla from my server and then reload without the data? I'm using rocket** (can't remember the name) to load Joomla. I already have the extracted files on my desktop...do I need to download a fresh file?

Thanks. I really am running into trouble with the sample data at this point. I simply can't figure out where it is, or how they have it loaded. It would take me about an hour or two to redo what I have already done (barring any problems), but I think that it might save me a lot more time.

Oh, and this is a biggie, if I don't have any sample data, how difficult is it going to be to get the RockFeature up and running? That feature makes me nervous, but it is the reason that I chose MixxMag.

Input on this issue, please? Thanks! (Oh, and keep it really simple - I'm pretty green with respects to both Joomla and RT)

    • Oh. Sorry. Thought that's where I put this. I'll move it.

Yes, that’s true, at least in my opinion, once you understand the basics things will fall into place and go much faster.

If I decide to do this, I'm not sure how to follow the expert's advise. I could load the version WITH the sample data onto my local server, and put the version WITHOUT the sample data onto my server. Would that be the best way to go? There’s a couple of ways to do this. I would

      A) Use the Rocket launcher to install both; the one WITH the sample data on my local install and the one WITHOUT on the server as you mentioned.

      B) Use the Rocket launcher to install both on your local server; one WITH the sample data and one WITHOUT, moving the completed site to a live server using JoomlaPack.

Whether you’re a beginner or not, having the sample data installed somewhere is really important. The tutorials are good, but nothing beats taking a look at how things are organized on the back end. But if you install the sample data on the site you want to develop, then you have to work around it, hence the advice to do two installs.

See the post about getting organized here:

      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=15...v=viewtopic&start=60

And see the posts with screen shots of the back end. The tutorials are great, but seeing the back end makes things much easier. Note these are fro Terran Tribune, but the concept and how things work are the same.

If I decide to do this, and want to load the program without the sample data, do I just unload my Joomla from my server and then reload without the data? Yes,

      A) Delete what ever Joomla install you have currently on your server or create a subdirectory for the Rocket Launcher install.
      B) Drop the tables in your database and use it for the new install or create a new one

Thanks. I really am running into trouble with the sample data at this point. I simply can't figure out where it is, or how they have it loaded. It would take me about an hour or two to redo what I have already done (barring any problems), but I think that it might save me a lot more time.

Basically, content is published two way; as Articles, or Modules.

To see what is published where, you can look at the template positions in the template module-position screen shot from the demo.

And if you're confused about where something is on the front end when you are looking for it on the back end, add this ?tp=1 to the end of your URL to view the module positions.

      E.g.: www.mysite.com/joomla/index.php?tp=1

Oh, and this is a biggie, if I don't have any sample data, how difficult is it going to be to get the RockFeature up and running? That feature makes me nervous, but it is the reason that I chose MixxMag.

Again, see the posts I referred to, with those screen shots, the sample date for a reference, the tutorials, and knowing what’s published where, you should be on your way.

Of course, post back in the MixxMag forum.

      Cheers!
