Need advice to allow customers access to reports via website

I really need help and guidance from someone with experience in corporate reporting via website.
A little background info: Currently we have numerous custom reports generated from our SQL server via MS Access which then emails the reports to our customers. Basically, we are spamming them with reports and the data is rarely current.
At present, I am moving and updating our current (old) website to Joomla! Our (grossly oversimplified) plan is to have a login section with the customer's login being thier customer code (our internal identifier). Based on that, we could pull customer specific info from the database, populate a template and show it to them through the website.
We are a smaller company and can't afford tens of thousands of dollars for a custom package to be developed. Besides, we hope to find a method that we can grow and control as necessary based on our customer's needs.
Will dbquery work for this? Please mention anything else that might fulfill this function.
Again, I appreciate any help, direction or advice I can get to help expedite this.
