    Frames and Virtuemart

Posted 18 years 2 months ago
    • In trying to solve an "empty Cart" problem in Virtuemart I came across this post from the lead developer for Virtuemart:
Do NOT use VirtueMart in a framed site

If you run a VirtueMart shop in a framed site, you will run into serious problems.

      *
Cookies are only stored for the domain they are set to. If www.example.com loads the shop from the domain shop.2lm2lcm.net in a frame, the cookie can’t be stored for www.example.com , but only for shop.2lm2lcm.net. This prevents that the cart contents can be kept.
      *
Internet Explorer has very restrictive security settings. When frames come into play, it quickly blocks cookies from domains. You can notice this by the red sign at the right bottom of the browser window.

I wish I had known this earlier!!! Elixer 2.0 is a great template and i have designed my site around it ... now I dont know what to do. Any suggestions? Do all the Rocket Themes templates use frames???

    • You can use VirtueMart in Elixer 2.0 no problem. I've played around with those two, personally, and not seen any issues.

Also, and I don't really know how to say this, but where did you get the notion that Elixer, or any of the RocketTheme themes, are using frames?

To the best of my knowledge, the only place that frames show up is when the wrapper component is used. Otherwise, there are divs, spans, tables and the like, but nothing that should cause any cookie problems, or throw up any security flags of the type you are mentioning.

    • Yeah none of the RT themes use frames. In fact I don't think I've ever seen a Joomla template using frames*...I mean, people frown at tables these days, I assumed frames were well and truly buried :)

*Except on demo servers, naturally ;)

    • Thanks for the quick reply .. I just jumped to conclusions when I saw the errors. Everything works fine in Firefox and Opera, but in IE7 the shopping cart comes up empty as you progress thru the cart. My posts to that forum suggested that it was a problem with the template. Sorry for the confusion - I will take the problem back to the Virtuemart forum...

    • If you have a link to the site, we might be able to offer more helpful insight.

In general, if you are running Elixer and having problems in IE only, you have a JavaScript problem.

In the index.php file for the template, near the top of the file, there will be three lines including three Javascript files. Try removing those lines (this will disable slimbox and reflection effects). If your site starts working in IE after that, you know that you have a Javascript conflict.

Sorry to say that this is a known problem, and there isn't a real fix for it right now, other than losing slimbox and reflections in favor of IE compatibility.

That's because IE7 is "a hunk of crap" as a wise man once said.
