Extension of a current site...using Simplex cause it is so SIMPLE

  • Extension of a current site...using Simplex cause it is so SIMPLE

    • I created an extension of one of my current sites. Nothing spectacular or fancy about it, but am looking for feed back on user friendliness of it. In other words - does it flow, easy to comprehend, nice layout etc...

Any feed back to make it better would be wonderful. Oh, and I would love to hear Andy's take on it - if he is not to busy. ::)

      charitycode.org

      Thanks

P.S. You can join too LOL

I am currently setting up a new development environment, which I should have done a long time ago, but kept putting off. This has been a slightly frustrating process for a few reasons, most of them having to do with lack of attentiveness on my part. The bottom line is I that might be a touch more critical than I normally would be, so my input should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, I will keep it constructive.

I love the concept, and it is a good choice of templates.

There are a few things that I would suggest looking at, though:

Firstly, the laser lines in the logo on the landing screen might benefit from some antialiasing.

Upon entering the site, the information might be more clear if it was reduced to a simple paragraph, followed by three graphical options, depending on who the viewer is, like so:

How it works: People get to support their charities when
they make purchases at local businesses! To find out more [charity] [business] [consumer]
about how this process works, please choose a path on
      the right hand side.

The result would be more Web 2.0 in design (which is in keeping with the template), and I think it would draw people in more. I'd be curious to see what the bounce rate is at the home page.

Another thing that I noticed is that the banner is aligned to the top of the gray background image, but at the bottom it overlaps the border, and spills over into the white space below. To my eye, it looks wrong, somehow. If it is intentional, you might want to thinking about incorporating some sort of shadowing, or other design element to subtly reinforce that it was intentional.

I think that the menu at the top could be cleaned up a bit. "Table of Content" should probably be "Table of Contents", and, although this is arguable, I would probably switch Table of Contents to be the first item, after Home.

There is a typo in the site's name as well - it reads Chairty Code, not Charity Code (look at the top of the browser, or at the tab to see what I am getting at).

I love the concept, and with a little more polishing, I think that you have a gem on your hands.

First off - Thank you so much...

      1. Yes, I hate the limitations of the software I have up here (my adobe photo suite is in Vegas - where I should be :P ) So, I am working with a home edition adobe software I picked up :'(

      2. the layout upon entering site - yes - that was one of my major concerns. So, I will take you up on that...my thought behind putting it up that way was - to hit you with the simple steps of how easy it is...then follow into options, but I can see where breaking it up will be beneficial.

      3. Thanks on the banners -- I will add a drop shadow to make it more appealing and stand out.

      4. as for spelling - somebody shoot me - I tend to not see the tree in the forest and focus on the big picture and forget to look at the details...plus I am getting old. OH NO I might need glasses.

Thanks for the feedback - question - Did it make you wish it was in place in your community? K - better question - Did it compel you to want it in place to help a certain cause or charity in your community? Just curious.

      Thanks
      William

    • 1. Ouch! I know how hard it is to not have one's trusty tools handy!

      2. I'm not any sort of expert on human cognition, but my feeling is that people tend to scan from side to side more easily than top down. So, when hitting someone with a proposition on the front page of a site, it makes sense to try to give them a three to five point pitch that, visually, flows from left to right (for a western audience, anyway). This is especially important if what you are offering is not obvious - In other words, if you are selling groceries, the user is already perfectly familiar, and they will ignore your front page, and attempt to find your prices ASAP. Most Web business models that are not simply selling products need to state their value proposition clearly on the front page, though.

      3. No problem, you might also want to get more feedback before doing a lot of work - I am a pretty small sample size. :D

      4. I pretty much insist on having someone other than myself proof any content that I come up with, the bottom line is that it is simply to easy to make a mistake, and then to subconsciously correct it, and thus not catch it.

      5. My gut feeling is that I would like to have it in place (and as I live in the SF Bay Area I think it could do quite well around here), but that the consumer case, on the site, is a bit weak. In other words, I would be more likely to sign up for this at a participating merchant location, or on the Web site of a charity that I am already affiliated with, but less likely to sign up on a site that is not run by one or the other. Furthermore, and this is pure speculation on my part, but I think that the charities themselves are your best bet - they will sign up, and then will go after local merchants to adopt the system.

    • Thanks again Matthew -

Yes, it is geared toward the businesses and charities - the consumers come into play with promotional campaigns and charities distributing cards with their Barcode. Plus, eventually having convenient Barcode listings of all the local charities at the registers.

      - I want to set it up so that businesses get free advertising for participating.
      - charities get lots of promotional items
      - plus I want to create a monthly magazine for each city
      - create a yearly listing of participating charities and merchants for each city.

I mean all the above could change - of course then I am hoping to get it off that big, sooner than later. :P

The stage I am at is - well, I put it up - now it needs to be refined. I just wanted it to work enough so that individuals who help me put this together will have some kind of tool - forum. Also, give anyone a chance to have a say....Your Voice Counts! is one of my motto's.

      Thanks again,

      William
