    Lightweight Templates

Posted 14 years 10 months ago
    • Further to my post about Google sitemaps I have a new question for you RT chaps!

Is it possible to list in an order the download speed of each template under RT?

I am sure it would be helpful for many when deciding what template to use.

      :)

    • Hello !
I cant freely say this is practicably impossible,as download speed of each file is not control by rt download however your dsl connection.
And I am sure 99 % of user would not care to know the speed they want the templates.
If you are referring to yslow speed once install again this depend on your hosing server
My clients are max out at 20 users per server on a quad core with 8 gig of ram 100mbit
So there performance and speed would be much better than cheap hosting that has over 100 + clients per server.

    • I am not referring to the speed of hosts but the SEO weight of RT's templates.

      For example, Afterburner blurb says
Afterburner is the fastest Joomla template ever and is completely free. The theme balances speed and search engine optimisation with a full feature set. The template is based on the standard SEO layout used in club templates, and is therefore fully dynamic and collapsible.

It would be nice to know the speed of other templates in relation to each other.

    • Hello!

Again this as to do with the server factor and would not be true speed test.
Remember more js more images more css slower a web site will be
install yslow and run the test yourself for your server.

    • Hi Pierre

      Thanks for the reply.

May be I should explain why this is important to my website. My site on Poland is going to be a very large site therefore i need it to be as website friendly as possible.

There are many SEO ideas and each developer has their own way of dealing with the subject but it would seem to me that some indication of the speed of each template produced would be very helpful to us developers.

RT produces some great templates, that's why I use them but a table of the overall expected speed would be really useful (not including all the add on extentions etc.).

The information on template, "afterburner" is very useful (link to info http://demo.rockettheme.com/free/afterburner/features/fast-loading Could something like this be done for all new templates perhaps?

    • I suspect a problem with your hosting environment or ISP provider vs. a problem with the templates.

The link to your test site ( www.visit-hampshire-uk.co.uk/ ) loaded in 4-5 seconds which is seven times faster than the fasted time you reported.

      rhuk_milkyway Joomla 265.46 seconds 149.03 seconds 132.40 seconds 92.48 seconds 50.94 seconds 34.19 seconds

On subsequent visits, it loaded in about 2 seconds...

How do the load times on Afterburner, Terrantribune Dark, and Affinity compare on your server vs. the demo server?

    • As I said this is a very simple test using third party software as I am only interested in finding out the speeds of different templates in relation to each other using the same method. The third party software does a very detailed analysis of the website with much tech detail which i am not interested in for this test.

It has been reported on the Web that Google is now also including download speeds to determin ratings. I have also received complaints about download speeds since changing to Affinity.

The good news is that RT with Afterburner is right up there in the front. :)

    • Found the solution - See http://www.webpoland.org

I run two different templates "afterburner" as the main one due to it downloading quickly and then viewers can select "affinity" if they wish to view a better template but with slower downloading speeds.

I had to adjust the names of two of the module positions on "afterburner" so both templates use the same names. I have also modified the "affinity" template (css and html) taking out some of the coding that i do not want to use which has had the effect of speeding up the website. I have also optimised the template images and am using compression ext. "RokGZipper" . I do not use the top menu dropdowns on affinity.

With my other community site I have discovered that not having any sub-menu items on the "Home" page will also decrease the size of the frontpage.

Doing the above has made a big difference - from around 880k to about 195k on the front page.

Hope this may inspire others to do the same.
