How to add custom fields to Registration Form?

Firstly, let me say that I am posting this question here because of the very helpful support I have received on RocketTheme specific questions, so please don't refer me to the Joomla Forums - pretty please?
Anyway, I would like the ability to add Fields to both the default Registration Form and Contact Form, and although I have tried 'CCK jSeblod', it was too complicated for me and lacked documentation. It also had too many features for my purposes.
So, can anyone guide me in the right direction that would enable me to do what I need? Please note that my website is not a commercial one (genealogy/family tree) so a free option would be best.

The contact form is part of the Joomla core, not a part of any of the templates.
So we have no choice but to suggest you search or post on joomla.org, or use a 3rd party component.
If you need to add fields to the core, you will have to hack the core or use an extension. - Thanks,
