How to stop unwanted subscribers/automatic subscribers ?

- I've started to notice a new members a week that are not activating their membership. Upon further inspection, these apper to be unsolicted. Their login name is always something that makes no sense and they never activate their account. That leads me to believe there is some kind of automated sign up going here? What is this and how can I stop it? I'm running on 1.0.12. Do I need to upgrade to 1.0.13 to stop this? Is there any reason I should not upgrade?

This sounds like a job for CAPTCHA. There are a number of them in the Joomla Extensions Library with the search keyword:
CAPTCHA
that you might find useful. I did notice a couple in there that are specific to the registration process.
