I need help to take a decision in one or two month.
I actually manage a website with video streaming. All videos are hosted in my shared account at hostgator (large disk space and unlimited BW for just $14/month).
I need 250Gb of disk space and actually more or less 3 Tb of BW! However, I think the website will grow quickly and I was thinking to purchase a dedicated server to provide a better streaming service.
I contacted ThePlanet and they have a package that seems to suit my actual needs:
Single Processor Quad Core Kentsfield 3210
+ 2GB RAM
+ 1x 250GB SATA Drive
OR + Windows 2003 Server, Standard Edition
OR + RedHat Enterprise 4 Linux
+ 10 IP Addresses
+ 3250GB Monthly Transfer
+ 100mbps Uplink
$25 Setup / $409 Per Month
However, I don't have knowledge about hardware and performance, especially for VOD.
If someone can give me some advice... thanks in advance!
You should look into Amazon S3 for serving up your Videos - Will save you a huge headache if your traffic and space needs continue to grow. Not to mention a whole heap of cash.
When I do the math for amazon S3 I think it's not very good if compare to a dedicated server.
Europe
Storage
$0.18 per GB-Month of storage used
Data Transfer
$0.10 per GB - all data transfer in
In my case: ($0.18 x 250) + ($0.10 x 3000) = $345/month
And the videos will be hosted in a distant server with less performance for streaming I think :
