Joomla and Subdomains: /sub rather than sub.sitename?

Posted 16 years 11 months ago
    • I have not yet had a need to use subdomains, but now I do...trying to have mini-sites for a few countries, all based on the main site (would change logo and menu items for the subs).

For example, I am trying to have a URL scheme like this:

      siteURL/india
      siteURL/china
      siteURL/UK

I checked my Rochen account and saw this:

Subdomains are URLs for different sections of your website. They use your main domain name and a prefix. For example, if your domain is mysite.com a sub-domain of your domain might be support. mysite.com

...not quite what I want to do, but doable. I am just not sure if I can create a directory within the main install, say, India, and then have a seperate install in there...thinking when you go to siteURL/india, the index file in that India folder would fire and peace on Earth will be achieved. :)

Any tips on whether or not this is doable and the best way to approach it?

    • It seems to me that you are asking if you can create a folder in your public_html, and install a separate installation of joomla (or any other script). Yes, you can do this.

To do this you would have to create new folders with a ftp-client (as many as you need for your subs) and just install separate installations in each of them. (preferably with separate databases.)

A folder in your public_html will have an address like the following: domain.com/foldername.

    • Danke, Thor.

But is this the best approach? I migrated from DotNetNuke and we had a 'portal' system where i could get it done with a single install, so thought perhaps there is a better approach in Joomla...just make up the multiple installs in directories in the root, so surprised this is how it actually works. ;)

I can't think of a downside to this approach, so guess I'll run with it if this how people do it. ;)
