hi everyone!
i just heard about a new search site called
www.blackle.com
. its searches are powered by google costum search and the site is displayed on a black background.
it is based on the idea that a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.
in january 2007 a blog post titled "black google would save 750 megawatt-hours a year", to be read here:
www.microtech.doe.gov/EnergyStar/info.htm#display
" proposed the theory that a black version of the google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine.
read for yourself and if you like the idea support blackle!! i think its cool!

hehehe ... this scam earns the Aussie company Heap Media millions.
Well.. not really a scam... just facts that are no longer relevant for most users. It saved energy during the days of CRT monitors... but now most people have LCD's.
I should really get some links to support my post. Will find some later

hi gollum!
happy to get your post as first answer, you are right, there is another side to this story.
really interesting the links you posted, i should have seen that before.
the fact that black backgrounds might actually INcrease energy use on certain screens would make the whole idea really useless.
i should think of other ideas of saving energy while spending time online, first one should be to switch the tv off thats running
anyways, i changed the "thumbs up" to "question mark" and removed the company name

I am optimistic that Nuclear Fusion energy will be available in the not to distant future so when that happens, energy waste is kind of a redundant subject
