    Native Joomla Forum vs Bridge+phpBB

Posted 15 years 10 months ago
    • Hi,
What would you prefer or recommend for Forum solution?
For example which approach is better - to install a native Joomla product (for example Kunena) or install a bridge (like JFusion or RokBridge) and then phpBB?
      Thanks!

    • Well, it's really up to you....

But since RT also had matching themes of many of its templates in the phpBB3 (separate) club, and phpBB3 is so well supported on their forum, and here for the phpBB3 styles forums, the choice is simple. 8)

Not to mention, RokBridge makes it easy to sync Joomla and phpBB3 members.....
    • Thanks,

    • Hi, JEM,
      thanks for your reply!
You speak like a real salesman :) But I don't want to become phpBB3 club member for now.
The guys at Kunena promise to integrate their forum with Jomsocial and other components. I am not recommending this solution, but it might be easier to work with native product.
Maybe other people will share their opinion too :)

    • Not a salesman, just trying to be practical. 8)

IMHO, 'promise' does not = current solution.....

I've been working with Joomla for a few years now and have come to realize that sometimes, even if it costs a few extra bucks, a paid solution is much better than promised one.

I've chased and chased issues with free components for weeks and months only to find if I had spent $20.00 I could have solved my problems in 10 minutes or less.

As I stated before, it's really a matter of how long you are willing to wait, and what you are willing to pay for.

    • There's ups and downs to each. What can be said is that phpBB3 is much farther along in their forum code and the others will probably take years to catch up. phpBB3 is just outstanding at what it does and how much it can handle.

I would base this on how much traffic and use you think the site will be getting. If it's hundreds of members and they all like the different features like JomSocial and use other stuff then just the forum, then a Native Joomla forum solution would be best. On the other hand, if your site is going to have thousands of users and most of the traffic is one the forum, then I'd definitely stick with a solid forum solution like phpBB3.

Lastly, the way RokBridge works with Joomla and phpBB3 and also the templates, one system does not effect the other system negatively in any way. If you have issue upgrading Joomla, that will not effect phpBB3 at all...and vice versa. Remember, all these "Native" Joomla forum solutions are alpha and beta right now so major code changes and growing pains are not out of the question. Also, Joomla 1.6 will be here at some point and then it's the whole upgrade game of who's ready and when...you won't have that with phpBB3.

    • My all-time favorite forum BY FAR is DCForum+ but dcscripts.com discontinued development a few years back. It's just way superior at facilitating dialog, community and exchange in comparison to non-threaded forums or poorly threaded forums (Fireboard). I just wanted to say that to someone who'd listen.

As for the answer to your question, I'd say phpBB because it's so well supported and because of the RT phpBB theme club.
