    • I am looking for a suggestion the will solve this problem. My client wants to update her website with articles and pictures herself and she has very little skill and no Joomla experience. I want her to be able to contribute articles and upload images from her PC to those articles in the simplest format ( super user friendly ). Other than using the existing Joomla article editor. There must be something foolproof or at least close out there?

    • Hi,

You could always make a small tutorial guide explaining how to add content and images via the Joomla editor.

Charge for the service, i have a far few clients who have never touched this type of subject and they are happy to pay to have a hour or two.

    • Yes that is the way I will have to go unless someone has another way. You know there is no such thing as too simple for people that are not "computer" inclined. She has expresses self doubt in navigating the editor more than once even with direction. I appreciate your advice maybe I can enroll her in a Joomla boot camp somewhere? What do you think of that idea. ....laugh!

    • Charge a little extra and offer her JCE utilities. Excellent documentation and more flexible than Joomla editor. It's also pretty easy to setup/learn even for a "noob." Documentation is pretty straightforward and most, if not all problems, are responded to quickly. You can find extensions at Joomla.org extensions (a Top Editor's Pick) or here: www.joomlacontenteditor.net I register my clients who opt in for this extension in "their" name with a year's subscription. Nice bonus, saves you time, and they get extra support which makes them "feel good."

I always stress to my clients to avail themselves of that wonderful little button called HELP before they contact me. Most questions after a site is up, running, and fully tested by "us" fall under "maintenance." I also include all the help sections from a fresh Joomla install on their site but leave them off the menu so only the ADMINS will see them. It gives the client a basic FAQ to fall back on and resources to answer their questions prior to calling you. After all, our time is money.

Turn her on to Joomla forums and encourage her to join. Even the clients know there comes a time they must learn a few things to keep their site up and running long after they have forgotten the "designer." Otherwise, they need a "maintenance" contract, not a "design" contract.

The bottom line is this. If a client wants a site, SOMEone has to learn how to maintain it, or they have to PAY someone to do it for them. The design and templating is the easy part (relatively speaking, of course). What comes after can be a nightmare in the wrong hands. If the "real truth" were known that anyone can do this with a little time, effort, and a reasonable learning curve, we'd be out of business, but that's what WE get paid for!

The "real truth" is that it is NOT easy, and not everyone can do it.
Each part of a website requires different talents, and some are not easy to do if you are not wired that way.
Design is different from Structure and Organization, and both are different from Content Creation. It may be easy for many of us, but remember that most people have no idea what a browser is, or FTP, or even the difference between an aol address and a real domain name web address for email.

There are so many sites I have seen that were destroyed by the people who say they can do it. And there is nothing you can do about it. The best you can do is give them a simple tutorial with screenshots, walk them thru it, and tell them to stick with the very simple stuff like editing what is already there.
Don't get frustrated over there frustration of not being able to do this 'simple' stuff. Remember that we have taken the time to learn at least the basics. You can give them links to different sites, and tell them help is at all of the different forums, but remember that most cannot do that because that requires time and motivation to start from the beginning.

Let's face it. We can manage websites for a Doctor's office, but we can't do what the doctor's do, or even the assistants handling all of the insurance claims. So, why do the doctors think they can do what WE do? (replace doctor with any business)

    • I often forget how overwhelming this is to others. To me it's a wonderful puzzle that changes constantly and I absolutely love puzzles. I've been a computer geek for almost 30 years and a web designer for over 10. I still feel like I'm new to it all because as soon as you get it all down, something new comes along and you have to learn it from the ground up all over again. Every site is unique and brings with it it's own set of problems. In any case, there ARE ways to help your client at least learn the basics and save a bit of time in the process.
