replacing template that is "hard coded"

I am trying to replace a clients template with a Rockettheme template. The current template has 2 parts. One template for the front page and one template for the rest of the site. When i load the roakettheme template and activate it works for everything but the home page. I can only describe this as the home page template is "hard coded " somehow.
Any ideas on how to tell the site to stap using the old templates home page. Is there code in the index.php itself controlling this.

after you upload the template you choose use as default?
