permissions please help!

  • permissions please help!

    • Hi everyone,

I'm sure there's an answer already here but I haven't been able to locate it, so I'm sorry for posting but I need to launch today...

I installed Reaction's rocketlauncher on a client's site. They are using plesk instead of cpanel which is what I'm used to, and for the life of me I couldn't find where I could extract the zip file on the server directly (in cpanel's file manager there's an option). So, I extracted it locally and uploaded the unzipped files. That, of course, has screwed up my permissions. I've been trying to fix as I go along but I'm a newbie with permissions and it's just becoming more trouble than it's worth because I keep coming up with writing issues.

Can someone please help me figure out what the permissions should be for the folders and files? Also, I'm on a mac system (10.5.2), the host is ipower, using plesk, and I'm using the new transmit 4.0 as my ftp app. In case that helps anyone in giving me instructions. I just don't know how to do batch permission settings so I'd need a little advice on that, too.

I've also installed rokstories, roktwittie, rokslideshow, rokstocks and again had to do it manually since through the admin it wouldn't allow me to install.

      Thank you!!! :)

    • just some ideas:

      1. Can you google plesk to see if it has zip extraction somewhere? But even if you do, wouldn't you still have the same permission problem... I'm not sure that the unzip procedure would necessarily assign extracted files the same protection bits as the user running it, or if it copies the permission bits of the zip file, or the files therein, or some combination.

      2. The standard tutorial advices extracting the files first, then uploading them by ftp. So I'd think you'd still have the same problem.

Hopefully an admin will contribute here.

    • Yes, I've done the procedure before. If you unzip directly from the server, the permission will stay intact. If you unzip locally and upload the folders, it can mess up your permissions. It's not the first time it happens to me. But in any case I'll see if I can find the standard tutorial you mention here, maybe that will help. Plus I'm still hoping an admin will see this post and help.

      Thank you.

Here is a tutorial I found. Sorry I can't comment more on the permissions issue.

Hopefully a more knowledgeable member or an admin will provide some specific advice on the permissions.

    • hi eclombardo,

sorry that your post has been left unnoticed by the moderators.

this happens sometimes when there is already some answers to your post by yourself within less than 2 hours. bumping your own topic is a bad idea, because it will kick your post out of the "view unanswered posts" which we moderators use a lot.

we moderators are more likely to open your topic if we see it has "0 replies".
if it has already 2, 3 or more replies, we think that another moderator is already helping out.

i am not familiar with plesk, so i have asked the other moderators to take a look.

      kat :)

    • Hi there,

I am not familiar with Plesk but while I am continuing to investigate (or someone else shows up with a better answer)...

Have you tried using an FTP client to change permissions 'recursively'?

With FileZilla (Open Source FTP client) you can:
      1. Right-click on a folder and recursively change permission for all sub-directories (in this case select the folder/directory in which your Joomla installation resides)
      2 - Do this twice.
      a. The first time when the pop up windows appears set it to do folders only and set the permission level to 755
      b. The second time, select files only and set them to 644

Then make sure that you have the FTP layer set to yes in your Global configuration, once your Joomla install is complete.

    • Also just came across this:
In Plesk 9.* under the domains 'Web Hosting Settings' icon you now have the ability to activate 'Fast CGI Application' for 'PHP Support' (instead of the normal 'Apache module' option). Do this and also tick the FastCGI support tickbox if required (i suggest to just do it anyway).

This will now stop the server writing files as apache:apache and instead write the files as ftpowner:psacln instead. So now you have full control over your files and can develop using Joomla in a PLESK system.

As usual you may have to '777' some directories which can be easily done through ftp.

Along with bumping you own post and knocking it out of the queue, if we don't have an answer, we can't reply, as is in the case of this post, many of us are not familiar with Plesk.

Installation issues are not a normal part of support and are answered as a courtesy, i.e., if we know the answer and can give it to you, we do.

But at this point, it seems getting the template installed either through FTPing the files (and dealing with permissions) or unzipping the zipped RL on the site (preferred method, which requires some script from what I have read) is a hosting issue.

Support for the templates should start after a successful install, honestly, we can't troubleshoot and resolve each and every install issue, doing so we would fail to provide support for the templates themselves.

I suggest contacting your host about changing files permissions or ask for detailed instruction on how to extract a zip file on the server. (I googled and found hundreds of examples, but I don't know who you are hosting with, so you should contact them directly).

As far as manually changing permissions, CD411 gave you instructions, but I also found this for reference:
