Setting categories for access only by members

I'm trying to make entire categories accessible only by registered members of the website.
I think I have that squared away, as I created a new access level called Members and assigned it to user group "Registered". Now, when I click a menu item that lists the contents of that category, I get a 404 error. I'd like a page or pop-up to appear that informs them that only registered members have access to that area of the website.
How can this be accomplished? I'm using Joomla 2.5 with the Modulus template.
