How to configure SEO URL parameters for Google and Bing?
Posted 12 years 10 months ago
Hi,
I have a Joomla 2.5.4 site with a Reflex template. I attached a screenshot of my Global Config SEF settings.
I wanted to know how to configure my site in webmaster tools for Google/Bing so that they're aren't duplicated content URL's or split value URL's due to the URL parameters creating indexed pages with the same content.
Google seems to be okay with the parameters since the message in my site account with their tools says: "Currently Googlebot isn't experiencing problems with coverage of your site, so you don't need to configure URL parameters"
So can anyone tell me which URL parameters I should list in their webmaster tools so I don't have duplicate content pages indexed?
Thanks for any advice!
NOTE to forum mods:Right-Click is disabled on my site but source code is visible. Unfortunately, I have some images on my site that are licensed and the agreement is that right-click be disabled. I use the F12 key for Firebug instead of right-click. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Nanci,
Thanks for replying to my post question.
I already have a robots.txt file with some folders disallowed. However, I'm not sure how to create the URL parameters to disallow in the robots.txt, or in the webmaster tools. I'm just not sure how the Joomla URL parameters are created when using the pagination links at the bottom of category pages, etc. I don't want to block valid URLs, just the duplicate ones with the un-needed parameters.
I'm not sure how to create an XML sitemap. I looked into it a long time ago but couldn't do it. I think the XML file has to list all the URLs of pages in one file, unless I'm mistaken. Also, I add new content on a regular basis so I'm not sure if the XML sitemap would have to be updated manually, or if there's a Joomla/RT extension that can do it automatically.
Let me know what my options are if you have any ideas.

Here you go nemmar, use this tool. It will create the sitemap for you, html, xml, ror and more and it is free. However, I do think there is a page limit, so if you are talking about thousands, i'm not sure. What ever the case, it is a great site and you will learn much.
What I do is just go in periodically and update the xml sitemap. And of course, I always keep the website sitemap up-to-date as I go.
The SEF extensions for Joomla also track links, broken and otherwise so you may want to consider using something like that, as well as backup tools like Akeeba. I think the key is find a software extension that you like, learn how to use them, and use them well... no reason to spread yourself thin.
