Migrating very simple J1.5 sites to J2.5

Posted 12 years 9 months ago
    • I have several very basic older J sites that I feel I should upgrade.

I wondered if I can just RocketLaunch a new install and then import the SQL database of content? None of the sites have any installed components/modules or plugins etc, so they're not complex in that regard.

I understand that the sections & categories have been replaced with a more versatile system but wondered if this would be the only fly in the ointment.

Any advice before I start swearing at the monitor would be appreciated. And, as this is my first foray into 2.5 (or indeed Joomla for over 12 months) are there any traps I should be wary of?

    • The database stuff is a LOT different so uploading it to a new install will not work in any way.

I decided to invest in the paid for upgrade solution and I'm glad I did. It saved me lots of headaches. A few things it does better than the others is keeping your category structure in line with your sections. It also keeps your article id's in tact which end up your urls if you use any blog layouts...so better for keeping urls in tact. I also found that it did a good job of keeping menu items converted over. If there was an extra component not included, it still included the menu item...broken, but there and you can just choose the right type item after you install and upgrade that 3rd party component.

I haven't looked super deep into it, but was happy with the results.

After moving content over to the new install, you then need to install the new template and configure everything. It's a lot of work, but if you have a lot of content to move, it's worth having this set up do it for you.
