Upgrade to J2.8 and huge jump in resource usage

    • I've got a number of sites (on shared hosting) that I recently upgraded to J2.8 (from 1.5.x).

I've just had contact from the host to say that the resource usage has increase by >100-400% (or more) and going by the stats, the new Joomla sites are definitely the culprits. The other sites I have, a couple of WP and another cms site, are barely blips on the resource landscape but the J sites are skyscrapers.

So far, I've disabled plugins that I'm not using (rokbox, rokgallery etc) and turned on the caching thingies. I've also changed the way the biggest site displays its few hundred articles in blog categories (now just showing 20 summaries at a time rather than the lot).

Is there anything else that I can do to optimise them? I'm afraid they're not business sites, so I can't afford VPS hosting.

    • It seems that making those changes have made a significant difference (although, there's only one day of data to look at).

I'm wondering if, for these sites, which are effectively, just articles, I should use one of the "out of the box" Joomla templates (e.g. without the RT grooviness) or is the problem Joomla rather than the presentation?

    • Update: After just trying to turn off any components and plugins that I wasn't using, I had to completely uninstall Gantry and the RT templates from the sites. I installed a plain vanilla template and the resources fell to J1.5 usage levels. It was a dramatic change as soon as I disabled all the RT stuff and very disappointing.
