Joomla 3, Gantry, RoketTheme = Fail

I am an avid Linux user, I know permissions, security, but this new Joomla 3 is killing me. You would think that the permissions on a RocketLauncher would have the permissions setup correctly - they are not. What I have seen via Google search and on this forum is to make the configuration.php 777. This is unsat. Joomla 3.0 shoudn't be a reasonable release unless the RocketTheme team thought it was a stable release.
What are the permissions required to secure a Joomla 3.0 release? What would yield a secure but modifiable Gantry + Joomla 3 integration?
Why is this company so unwilling to provide proper documentation to their customers for the sake of their own product? Don't blame it on Joomla, they are a GLP based organization and state that 2.5 is the right method to take - why publish your product and guarantee to a customer that it works when it doesn't?
