One Domain with many Sub Domains Single Joomla Setup?

Posted 11 years 7 months ago
    • Hi All,

I can't go in to the full ins and outs of the business idea but I need to pick people's brains as to how I may be best setting this venture up, using Joomla 3.1 and a Rockettheme club template(s), as I've always just done single straight domain and single template sites before.

It's Football related and essentially I will have one main URL www.domain.com and have the entrance template as it were.

Now whilst I have the main URL domain.com with the entrance template, this will showcase a small snippet of favoured content and link to each minisite sub domain. Also naturally each minisite sub domain will have their own version of the chosen template and joomla systems, also 3rd party add-ons such as JomSocial.

Then I will need to create dozens of sub domains running off the main URL of www.domain.com so for e.g. minisite1.domain.com , minisite2.domain.com and so forth.

My first question is the above do-able and if so is this the best way to administer such a venture with so many minisites that are directy related but different owners.

The above will be sitting on a VPS scalable server, so we can scale up the resources as and when demand is required and so forth.

I look forward to hearing from people soon.

      Regards,

    • Hi there,

It could work that way but then you get into the realms of tracking updates and keeping everything secure with so many sites. I am sure I saw an extension on Joomla.org that lets you achieve what you describe by using one Joomla set up but different databases.

      Hope this helps 8)

      Regards

    • David,

Thanks for that and I have to admit I was thinking to myself after the OP about things like multiple sites / mini sites = risk of way too many updates but this seems it may not be the case thankfully.

I've found http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/multiple-sites/7557 since and a free one at that called Virtual Domains, so will try this out before taking any plunge with a commercial kind, although I'm waiting to hear back from the developer how it stands regarding sub-domains of the main domain and also if it will enable uninterrupted use of 3rd party extensions like JomSocial, Map Geotagging extensions and so forth.

I just have to get my head around the whole menu system, template system, content system for this specific venture, to make it all flow correctly for the end user etc.

I don't even know where I stand with a RT template, used in this way as in one main domain but variations in club colours on sub domains or the main domain?

      Regards,
