    SOLVED Error displaying the error page: Application Instantiation Error

    Posted 10 years 5 months ago
    • Greetings,

      A few months back I created the site www.rionpaige.com using the corvous template. I then handed the site over to someone else to manage for Rion (X-factor contestant singer).

      They contacted me today that they were recieving this error:
      Error displaying the error page: Application Instantiation Error

      When visiting the site. I also can not get to the back-end. After extensive research it seems to be a MySql issue. I have retrieved the configuration.php file via FTP, and everything looks OK as far as I can tell (this is above my pay scale).

      The first thing I tried was to create a new DB user through c-panel throught the hosting site, godaddy.

      I then changed the USER and PASS in the config.php file to match the new user. No luck.

      There is no back-up for the site. (I set the site up as a favor for Rion, and like I said, handed it over to her marketing company months ago, that was supposed to manage everything, apparently no to well...) anyway.

      This apparently happened in the last couple of days, as the site was visable Monday. I do not believe that the folks handeling the site have done any recent updates. I also can't remember what version of Joomla I used, but I think it was 3.X (my first time from 2.5). Not sure what would have caused this to happen, my guess is a hack.

      Anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to get this site back up?

      The only thing I can think might be wrong with my NEW user/pass was that the original config.php file had the password scrambled. Of course when I enter the new password it is not. Im not sure if this is an issue or not. Below is the first portion of the config file.

      public $offline = '0';
      public $offline_message = 'This site is down for maintenance.<br /> Please check back again soon.';
      public $display_offline_message = '1';
      public $offline_image = '';
      public $sitename = 'Rion Paige';
      public $editor = 'jce';
      public $captcha = '0';
      public $list_limit = '20';
      public $access = '1';
      public $dbtype = 'mysqli';
      public $host = 'localhost';
      public $user = 'REMOVED*FOR*THIS*POST_jos1';
      public $password = 'XFactor';
      public $db = 'REMOVED*FOR*THIS*POST_jos1';
      public $dbprefix = 'jos_';
      public $secret = 'DH6jTJrVcTcwKUNf';

    • db connection issues can be a number of things... and they're really outside of the scope of support on this forum... but yeah, be CRAZY about checking your username and password... make sure you're not editing the config.php file in a non-utf text editor... notepad, notepad ++, sublime text, dreamweaver, etc would be fine... set the password to something simple like test1234... try changing 'mysqli' to 'mysql'... try changing localhost to 127.0.0.1... trying changing it to your site's IP address... make sure your dbprefix is correct...

      I edited your post and removed your password...

      If your webhost isn't terrible they should have backups... I apologize if you're hosting this, you're not terrible, you seem nice :) -- you may find that in your WHM backups were enabled if that's the case...

    • OK, I think I figured out what happen. I downloaded the DB and took a browse through it. Turns out somewhere around tuesday 500,000 K2 Comments were left, usernames were all rip-off products. I guess first thing to do will be to figure out how to delete 500k worth of lines from the DB. I'll let you know how it goes.
