Hexeris - K2 wont process uploaded images...

Hi,
- Installed quick start for Hexeris
- K2 v 2.6.8
When I go via the back end into K2 > Items > New Item > Image Tab
and then either upload an image or select one from the server then the preview image is "blank" is shows a little grey square and when clicked produces an empty popup window.
- Checked that Components > K2 > Information that all directories are writeable (and they are)
- Turned on maximum error reporting but no errors produced
Any ideas? Have you seen this before?
