Upgrading PHP ?? RE: Multiple sites, multiple templates

We are running various sites using RocketTheme templates (Metropolis, Fracture, Paradox) and want to use Salient for one of our newer sites.
We are running PHP 5.3 on our server, Salient apparently requires an upgrade to PHP 5.4, which we can do, but we want to make sure this will not affect our live sites, which we've had for years.
Is there anything we need to do to upgrade our other sites first to make sure there are no issues with them when we upgrade PHP?

So far as I know all of our templates should be fine on php 5.4 and 5.5+... certainly any released in the last 3 or so years... legacy templates are no longer updated but everything else is maintained with releases as needed. We still update templates we made in 2008
It'd be worth checking to ensure that you have the latest version of any of our templates installed first, but template wise, there shouldn't be any issues...
any RT Extensions as well, the same would hold true, make sure they're updated.
you can always update stuff afterwards as well... joomla will certainly function fine either way
make sure you can revert easily to PHP 5.3 on the off-chance something goes massively wrong... uh... I *think* 5.4 introduce strict standards which outputs uncessary errors sometimes... make sure you have joomla error reporting set to None
