SOLVED Force HTTPS and external links

Posted 5 years 8 months ago
    • I have a SSL certificate installed on my site and have enabled Force HTTPS in the config server settings. Now when I click on any link to an external website using http, it tries to load a https version and won't connect. Disabling Force HTTPS fixes the problem but as a result places my site back to http.

How can I load my site as https and keep my http external links working as they should ?

    • This is a Joomla thing, not a template thing... but force HTTPS doesn't do that to external links... please detail your example and provide a link to your page

    • Hi Matt,

I understand that it's a Joomla issue, but thought that maybe someone could kindly help anyway.. apologies if it's inappropriate.

I've added the site address for you.. the external links are in the footer and also there are some http text links that don't connect. If you hover over the links, you can see that they're all https, but in my modules, articles etc they're http.

It's strange too, before when I disabled Force HTTPS, then the links worked and my site loaded as http. Now the site shows as https whether its disabled or not. I've left it enabled now, but any external links pointing at http sites won't connect.

      Any help appreciated !
      Thx

    • Please be specific... are you referring to the links/logos in your footer? I see they're all rendering https...

Joomla's Force SSL simply won't effect links in articles or modules that are hardcoded to http://

Are you running Admin Tools or some other 3rd party "security" or "admin" plugin? Admin Tools has a "Convert all links to HTTPS when site is accessed over SSL" option that WILL convert hardcoded module/article http links to https

    • Thx Matt,

Yes, I was referring to the logos and also text links on a few of the pages.

I had 'convert links to https' set in admin tools as you said, so I've disabled that now and the external links are now working ok. Thx for that :)

Only issue now is that my site shows in Chrome as not using a private connection anymore ie. the padlock has now disappeared in all browsers. I'll try and figure out what's happening.

Many thanks for helping me fix the problem. Helpful support from RT as usual.. whatever the issue !

      Cheers Matt

    • Invalid Intermediate: www.whynopadlock.com/

... so your SSL isn't installed right or is using an invalid or expired upstream CA

      ;)

If a thread is solved please edit your *original / first* post and place "[SOLVED]" (no quotes; but you do need the brackets) at the beginning of your post title. Changing the post icon to the Solved Checkmark is helpful too. :)
