Subdomains

Does anybody knows if it is possible with Joomla to have subsites running independently (navigation and template) but using the same database that the main Joomla installation ?
For instance tiger.animals.com would be a subsite of animals.com

- I guess it's possible if you install joomla with another prefix for the database. I wouldn't recommend having this setup though.

- That functionality was partly achieved with some url rewriting (Opensef) but this has not been updated for Joomla 1.5.
