Question: File Ownership using Rocketlauncher

  • Question: File Ownership using Rocketlauncher

    • I successfully installed Joomla 1.5.7 uploading via Filezilla, but when I checked the file permissions from Admin->System Info->Directory Permissions, all files and directories showed "unwritable" even though the directories were set at 755. I don't like setting directory permissions at 777 but this was the only setting my Joomla installation would finally show the green "writable" status. I thought uploading via FTP gave me ownership (as opposed to the webserver), and therefore Joomla directories should show up as writable at 755.

I have shared hosting, which runs PHP5, PHP Safemode=Off. I've used Cpanel to install Joomla before, but they don't have the lastest Joomla build, and I'm not sure I want their directory defaults, and I believe file/directory ownership goes to the webserver using Fantastico.

I'm wondering if using Rocketlauncher gives the file/directory ownership to the webserver. I'm going to need to overwrite some files (like config.php and some of the graphics) after installation. What is the best and most secure installation method, in terms of file/directory ownership?

I'm a relative newbie, and I hope the question might be useful to other newbies. Thanks in advance.

    • Uploading via FTP should set the correct permissions. Using 755 should work for folders and 646 for files that needs to be writable. Often you can ignore that "is not writable!" message because your changes will still be made :)
