Using Migration Script with Rocket Launcher

    • Hi

I've been trying to update a website with the new Akiraka template and having no end of problems...I think the issues are with the "clutter" thats with the old website, rather than the tempalte itself. The site is a J1.0 site so I migrated it out and put it a Joomla 1.5.9 build, then applied the template over that.

However....AjaxSearch is not working, colour changer is causing grief (Joomla 1.5 issue more than anything!) and the Nav Menu I have does not work in IE6 and removes images from display (usimg any browser) when I select a sub menu option. I installed the RocketLauncher and everything works fine on IE6 and other browsers.

So....my question is (eventually!!) can I use Rocket Launcher but use a migration script instead of installing the sample data (ie the demo content) so all the modules etc are configured as per the demo but with my content??? Does that make sense as to what I'm asking??

      Any guidance appreciated

      Cheers

      Kevin

No, the Rocket Laucher is for fresh install only. I can see what you are tying to do, but it doesn't work that way. What ever template you were using before, and the template you are going to install are bound to be different not only on Module positions, but extensions as well. When you change from one template to the next, there no getting around it, there's some work that has to be done.

If you apply a template, you have to move stuff to match the new positions as well as install the new extensions.

A reply to another user with basically the same question:
      Nanci wrote:
When you change from one template to another everything is not going to preview perfectly, nor is it assigned by any form of automation. It can't be.

Not all modules and positions you have used in one template are necessarily named the same or positioned the same from that template to another. The same goes for the styling.

As an example; There is no way for Joomla! to know that you want your "Breadcrumbs" to be assigned to the new Akiraka Breadcrumbs-Bottom module position without you assigning the Breadcrumbs to that position. Unless of course, the position you had them assigned to before was named the same.

To begin you should open EXTENSIONS > TEMPLATE manager and assign any needed parameters within your new template.

Next I would open each module and assign the new positions within your new template accordingly.

You will need to do the same with your articles and any and all module suffixes you have assigned previously.

Changes and or new assignments may also be needed in your menu structure.

Module Variations: The same applies here. The module variation suffixes for Akiraka are not named or positioned the same as modules and module variations in Hivemind.

It sounds worse than it is. I've done this before... it just takes a bit of organizing and a little time.

The CHOICE of how you do this and if you do this is yours. If you have a smaller site with little content it may be quicker and more efficient to start fresh. Backup your data first and make some screen shots of how you had it before so you won't have to go completely go by memory.

Though I am sure this is not what you wanted to hear, I do hope this at least helps you to get started and helps you understand what is going on. :o

    • Cheers Jem

I'll probably just redo my site based on the RocketLauncher site....it's not a biggie apart from about 50 odd feedback articles which I was trying to avoid re-doing!!

      Thanks again

    • Related to this, I've got a question...

I tried to install using rocket launcher on the hosting server. For some reason, I encounter problems (i.e. the site can't proceed to the admin access). So, I deleted everything again and started from scratch. This time, I used the hosting company's built in script installer for joomla 1.5.7 which is not updated. So, what I did was update the joomla version to 1.5.9. Then, I installed the chromatophore template. It uploaded well but of course it's bare. Is it as simple as copying the files from the rocketlauncher version of chromatophore onto the server and the demo data gets uploaded as well? I can't offer a screenshot or link to the site since its down now.

    • Sorry, it won't work that way, to duplicate the deme you have to use the Rocket Launcher and install the sample data.

It can't be added to an existing install.

Could you be a little specific about not being able to access the admin area?

Can you install the RL and then heve no access to the admin area, or are you haveing trouble starting the install.

      Here are notes:

      For quick reference:

      NOTE!!!

The Rocket Launcher is for a fresh install ONLY.

It contains a complete version of the latest Joomla release, the template, and all the sample data you see in the demo. Whether or not you decide to install the sample data is up to you. If you want to replicate the demo site, use it, if you want a clean install of Joomla with the template applied, don’t use it.

You can not use the Rocket Launcher in an existing install of Joomla. If you already have an existing install of Joomla, you will need to apply the template file to it.

      Unzip the Rocket Launcher.

FTP the folder and its contents to, depending on your platform, public_html or httdocs

Alternately, you can upload the zipped RL package and extract it on your server through the control panel.

Before you start, you’ll need to create a database on your server.

Once you’ve uploaded the Rocket Launcher and created a database, browse to the folder,

      Ex: www.mysite.com/template_directory_name

You don't have to navigate to the installation folder, if Joomla hasn't been installed yet, it will navigate to the install directory automatically. (How cool is that?!)

Note: It's a really simple point, but don't be confused by the ' www.mysite.com/ ' replace 'mysite.com' with your site's URL, for example, here it would be www.rockettheme.com/template_directory_name

      The installation screen will appear.

      Screen 1:
      Choose language

      Screen 2:
      Pre-installation Check

      Screen 3:
      License

      Screen 4:
You’ll need the following info to make the database connection with Joomla:
      Host Name
Username (for the database you’ve created)
Password (for the database you’ve created)
Database Name (for the database you’ve created)

      Screen 5:
You can skip this and use an FTP client

      Screen6:
Site Name: This will appear in the title bar of your browser.
Your e-mail: the address you want to use to receive mail from the site
Password: this is for the admin login for Joomla, it can be different than the DB password.

      Install Sample Data?
If you want to replicate the site with all the sample content, click on ‘Install Sample Data’.
If you don’t want to install the sample data, click next, a prompt will appear confirming that you want to skip.

      Screen 7:
You’ll be prompted to delete or rename the installation directory.

Before you can view the site or login as administrator, you’ll need to browse to the directory in your FTP client or CP and do so.
