I have tried to select my sites pages to be SEO under the config section of the backend but every time i do that, the site goes down and the template does not work. how can i fix this?

Did you make this changes for sef urls to function properly:
1) Enable mod_rewrite in global configuration
2) change htaccess.txt to .htaccess
