If your website is "
www.yoursite.com
", before you go live with it and before the domain name is switched over, you might be accessing it from something like "
www.tempdomain/~yoursite
".
The second one (the temp one) won't work with SEO.
If you're using the real domain name, "
www.yoursite.com
", make sure that the htaccess file is ".htaccess" like mentioned above and then double check your settings in the Joomla backend under Global Configuration. Make sure that the first two are set to yet and "add file type" is set to no.
Thanks Ben. I reread the sh404sef module documentation and it has some caveats about setting mod-rewrite. I will have to test turning it on and see how the site behaves. Will report back my findings.
In the mean time I used the 'alias' section in sh404sef to redirect old URLs, seems to work fine. Updated my sitemap so in time google will 'hopefully' drop the old URLs from its index.
