SOLVED Permissions seem to be reset

Posted 16 years 4 weeks ago
    • I really do not understand what may have happened. I have been installing a few modules and working with VirtueMart and all the sudden most of my folders have had the permissions re-set to no access. I can't even upload a picture in VM. Any ideas what may have happened. I am not a php expert and i see some forum entries about php settings.

any ideas would be appreciated. thank you

    • All folders in Joomla, or just VM folders?

Have you checked for a solution at VM?
    • Thanks,

    • Well, I can't tell you why it happened, but you can CHMOD the folders through your host's CP or your FTP client.

    • i can do that - I was just concerned that i open up some folder that should be closed down and give some hacker access to my site. Do you have any ideas on certain areas/files/folders that need to be not accessible or writable.

thank you for you quick responses.

    • Good question and good on you for thinking to double check!

The general rule of thumb is that directories are set to 755 and files set to 644. The one file that is an exception is the configuration file that can be set to 444.

Here's the actual Joomla wiki suggestion on a basic install of Joomla and what to do with permissions:
      Adjust file and directory permissions

I also have a help topic going that has a section of more links to helpful info dealing with security. It's a collection of what I've learned from the guys on this site. Just scroll down for the title Joomla Security and Configuration
