Installing Extensions and RocketLauncher

    • Hi All:

I'm new to Joomla and RocketTheme. I've spent sometime playing with Joomla, installing it, uninstalling it and am ready to use a Theme to create my personal site. I'm not a web developer, but do have understanding of the different technologies.

Still a babe in the woods though.

Anyway, I've read the directions and am getting stuck right off the bat.

I downloaded the Akiraka template and then the source files, the extensions, the RocketLauncher files and the pdf's.

I was able to get the base template installed on my local machine, not putting it up on my webserver til I've played it a bit more locally.

I tried using the Install file, it didn't work had to open it into a folder and then tell the Installer to look in a path. The .tar wouldn't open on it's own.

Now I'm trying to install the source files and extensions, which are downloaded as .zip files. They will not open with the installer. I unzipped them to seperate folders and tried to have the installer navigate to the path/directory, it doesn't work either.

I slept on it thinking the morning would bring new understanding, alas it's not so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks

      Kim Cassidy

    • The template and extensions are for adding the template to an existing install.

The source files cannot be installed, they are for editing the images for the template in Fireworks.

Not the pictures you see, but the images that make up the boarder, padding, shadows, etc.

The PDFs are just tutorials for reference.

IF you want to install extension to an existing template, you have to unzip the extensions package and install the extensions separately.

Best idea is to install the template on your localhost using the Rocket Launcher; it will create a duplicate of the demo site.

      Here are some notes:

      For quick reference:

      NOTE!!!

The Rocket Launcher is for a fresh install ONLY.

It contains a complete version of the latest Joomla release, the template, and all the sample data you see in the demo. Whether or not you decide to install the sample data is up to you. If you want to replicate the demo site, use it, if you want a clean install of Joomla with the template applied, don’t use it.

You can not use the Rocket Launcher in an existing install of Joomla. If you already have an existing install of Joomla, you will need to apply the template file to it.

      Unzip the Rocket Launcher.

FTP the folder and its contents to, depending on your platform, public_html or httdocs

Alternately, you can upload the zipped RL package and extract it on your server through the control panel.

Before you start, you’ll need to create a database on your server.

Once you’ve uploaded the Rocket Launcher and created a database, browse to the folder,

      Ex: www.mysite.com/template_directory_name

You don't have to navigate to the installation folder, if Joomla hasn't been installed yet, it will navigate to the install directory automatically. (How cool is that?!)

Note: It's a really simple point, but don't be confused by the ' www.mysite.com/ ' replace 'mysite.com' with your site's URL, for example, here it would be www.rockettheme.com/template_directory_name

      The installation screen will appear.

      Screen 1:
      Choose language

      Screen 2:
      Pre-installation Check

      Screen 3:
      License

      Screen 4:
You’ll need the following info to make the database connection with Joomla:
      Host Name
Username (for the database you’ve created)
Password (for the database you’ve created)
Database Name (for the database you’ve created)

      Screen 5:
You can skip this and use an FTP client

      Screen6:
Site Name: This will appear in the title bar of your browser.
Your e-mail: the address you want to use to receive mail from the site
Password: this is for the admin login for Joomla, it can be different than the DB password.

      Install Sample Data?
If you want to replicate the site with all the sample content, click on ‘Install Sample Data’.
If you don’t want to install the sample data, click next, a prompt will appear confirming that you want to skip.

      Screen 7:
You’ll be prompted to delete or rename the installation directory.

Before you can view the site or login as administrator, you’ll need to browse to the directory in your FTP client or CP and do so.

    • Ahhhhaaa would help if I read the text under the downloads now wouldn't it ;)

Okay so I did a fresh install, and set Akiraka as the default template - no sample data installed.

Sorry to be totally dense, but do I now install the extensions or are they all there now?

The site admin looks just like my other install of Joomla, I don't see the features to change colors, tabs, etc..

      Thanks again.

    • Go to the template manager and change the default to Akiraka.

If you used the RL to install the sample data, the extensions have been install.

You'll have to configure them separately, you can find the documentation in the PDFs or in the tutorials included in the demo..

I suggest installing a 'spare' copy of Akiraka using the RL and the sample data on your localhost or a sub directory of your site to use as a reference.

    • So it means that if I install with the rocketlauncher without the sample data, I will not have the extensions installed? I thought sample data would be only text info.

No, the extensions will be installed, the sample data (demo content) won't.

    • I, too, fell victim to the fact that there are two terms ("sample data," and "demo content") referring to the same one thing.

If they are one and the same thing, then, please, in the future, it would help new comers to use only one term, not two. Thanks.
