    Adding multiple users to existing site

    Posted 15 years 9 months ago
    • Hi there,
      I am replacing my old site with a Joomla! site and want to migrate all the registered users without making them log-in again. Is there any way to upload a list of usernames/passwords directly into the User Manager? Or does each of my visitors need to log-in individually? I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this question, but I can't find a solution in the forums!
      Cheers, Andrew

    • If it's not too many of them you can just add users through the Joomla Backend. When you add them, they will get an email with the information to log in to the new site so if you don't include a password, it will generate one for them.

      Global Configuration -> User Manager

      Then click "New".

      Make sure to set their permission level at "Registered" and not something like "Super Administrator.

    • The problem is that there ARE many of them...over 1200 users...is thre no easy way to do this? I'm also wondering if Joomla is robust enough to handle that many!

    • For importing that many users, if you are experienced in MySQL and Excel, you can probably import them by using the database table you have now. You need to be VERY careful doing this though and make sure you have "all your i's dotted and t's crossed".

      I would search the extensions directory at Joomla.org though for an importer of some kind that would pull in a CSV file.

      http://extensions.joomla.org/

      As far as Joomla being "robust" enough to handle that many users, there are many sites with over 100,000 users doing just fine and with room to grow! Joomla is incredibly capable and I don't think you would have to worry about outgrowing it until you're ready to take on Facebook or something. There are Joomla run sites with over 500,000 users running just fine out there.

      If you are looking for a forum on a site, I strongly suggest making use of the RocketTheme templates for phpBB3 and using it. This is also a very capable forum that can handle whatever you throw at it.
