Posted 15 years 4 months ago
    • Hello, I am trying to use the user manger to create access for logged in user for a site I am working on with the versatility 4 template. I need one set of users to have access to one additional tab on the site and another set of users to have additional access to 3 tabs on the site.

I noticed there is a choice for tabs and articles to be public registered or special . So i think the answer lies in figure out how to create a special user.

I think my question would be how do i create a special user... ie a user that can see all that is public and all that is registered and all that is special

      thanks

    • Hey Nanci I don't see a user set up, but i believe you mean the user manager. and when i go to set up a user in the user manager. I don't see anything that says special? how do I assign someone special rights?

    • Nanci, Here is my question

'when in the user manager, how do i assign a user "special" rights? is a back end user considered special, where a front end is just registered?"

    • Hi George,

There are TWO places to setup and assign:
      1. User Manager: set user group
      2. Menu, Articles, Module Manager: set access level

You have to first assign the user to a group, then assign a access level to the item.

Below I've created a brief example for a school. In the school we have students, teachers and administrative staff.

Public (No user setup): Public Access, Students, Teachers, Admin
      Registered: Teachers, Admin
      Special: Admin Only

When a Student visits the site they will only be able to view items assigned as "Public."
When a Teacher visits the site they will be able to view all "Public" items, and all "Registered" access items.
When an Administrator visits the site they will be able to view all "Public, Registered and Administrative" items.

Open the Main Menu. Across the top you will see a tab labeled Access Level.
Open the Article Manager. Across the top you will see a tab labeled Access Level.
Open the Module Manager. Across the top you will see a tab labeled Access Level.

It is in the "Access Level" you make the assignment.

In the Joomla Help files and at www.joomla.org it explains users and user setup in great detail.

      help.joomla.org/index2.php?option=com_co...screen.users.edit.15

In the User Manager you setup and assign the user to a user group. The following options appear as well as others.

Group. The user's Group. The following Groups are available:

      * Registered User: Normal visitors who register at the site. Can view Menu Items that have Access Level of Registered. Cannot edit or submit articles.
      * Author: Can submit new articles for approval in the front end only. A Publisher or higher must approve. Cannot edit existing articles.
      * Editor: Can submit new articles or edit existing articles from the front end only. A Publisher or higher must approve.
      * Publisher: Can submit, edit, or publish articles from the front end only.
      * Manager, Administrator and Super Administrator: Can do all of the above plus can log into the back end with increasing rights.

      Luck to you.
