Alternate colors and on hover style with table rows

Across Joomla administrator screens (Article Manager, Module Manager, etc.) the tables shown have alternating colors for rows. Also there is a light yellowish highlight when the cursor is on of the <tr> elements.
How is such an effect added to tables created manually in an article to show on the website? I see alternating class="sectiontableentry1" and class="sectiontableentry2" on the <tr> elements if I look at the source of the pages. Even though it doesn't make sense to add the classes manually in the code, when I tried doing it the hover effect is still not shown.
Is there a simple way to make this happen? - Some damn thing always goes wrong
