Upgrading Joomla

Okay, I used a Rocketpack to install Replicant and Joomla 1.5.9.
I would like to upgrade 1.5.9 to the latest version of Joomla.
I read the page linked from this site, which sounds like I need to download the patch files, and then FTP them. But, if I FTP the mod and com folders the patch versions don't have all of my additions.
So, basically, I am a complete idiot and need an idiot guide on what to do to upgrade.
I tried the Sam Moffatt updater...but for some reason no matter what I do...when I install it, it SAYS it is installed, it creates a directory, and a link in the components drop down, but the screen is white and when I check the directory it is empty.
Any advice for someone struggling?

The upgrade only updates the Joomla core, not the template files or any 3rd part components you have installed.
Follow the instructions from the link provided, this will overwrite the Joomla core files that heve been updates, nothing more.
It will not change the template or anything else you have installed. - Thanks,
