Click to reveal submenu

    • My company was informed that there is a patent on the technology that allows users to mouse over Menu Items that automatically reveal their submenus. We need to change it to where you have to click on the Menu Item to reveal the submenu. What component/module can I use to do this? Any suggestions?

      Thank you.

    • It would only require a minor alteration...finding where is a different story however :)
Basicly change the opening from onmouseover to onmouseclick...But I'd start with verifying if that patent really exists :)

    • Hello Tom,
where did you read about this patent? If it ever exist I'm suspecting is a really specific scenario and technology, I hardly doubt this could be so general to include, for example, Fusion of RocketTheme. If you surf the web you'll notice the dropdowns menu are very common and the technology behind it is purely XHTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Regarding your request of changing the dropdowns to be revealed by click, rather than by mouse over, I'm afraid this is not going to be possible.
The reasons are mostly two. Firstly, in Joomla!, but really can be any platform, a parent menu item can also be a link which takes you to a specific page. If we assign the click to show/hide its submenu, the parent menu item will loose entirely its function of "link" and just become a placeholder for expanding or contracting the submenu. Secondly, during these many years the web users have got used to have menus working mouse overing, changing the behaviour to click will create a lot of confusion.

    • Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, it is a legitimate legal suit with a legitimate patent specifying very broadly that mouse over menu functions are owned by a patent company. This company bought the technology from the original inventor to specifically go after large companies with websites for patent infringements. The patent ends in August 2010 and all use of the technology will be free to use. The reason you may not have heard of it is that they are only going after very large corporations for their legal suit. They force you to buy a license which starts around 500k if you do not cease using the technology. I work for a large corporation and we have decided to just stop using the type of menu. I said exactly what you said initially as well, but we have a team of patent lawyers who, after investigating, deemed the suit legitimate and is forcing IT to comply. (Apple, HP and other large companies have already paid the licensing fee). It is crazy. There are so many sites with this menu type.....but it is what it is. We have tried to fight it getting advice from two different patent law firms and both have come back to us saying we must comply.
Anyway....I initially think your wrong about it not being possible as well....I built a site for a furniture company that has Virtuemart as a shopping cart plug-in. On a side menu on the left hand side of the site under PRODUCTS CATEGORIES....it has the exact menu function I am looking for. Please see this link... www.ehuffmans.com/ Notice there is even a plus symbol and a minus symbol to open and collapse the menu to reveal submenus. I just need this function on the main menu and side menus of my site but not using Virtuemart. Any further comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks for your help.

    • I see, what you describing is the Splitmenu. Most templates, if not all, do have support for it. You can switch the menutype from the admin and will end up with the top menu with no dropdowns and a sidebar menu that will appear based on the page you are.
Although what you're asking, the arrows that contract / expands the submenus, was specific for Mynxx, we used that similar approach another time with Replicant v2, if you want to check out ( Replicant v2 demo ).
As that is going to require some custom integration, I'd suggest you to open the request in the specific section of the template of your choice. So that we know where to look at and where possible help you with the integration of that feature.
