Duplicate Template after Update

When I install the updated rt-gantry template for 2.5 I get two instances of the template with nothing set as default. By the time I get it fixed I end up with my setting wiped and my copies hosed. Any suggestions for updating the existing template like club templates do? I have one more to do and I am avoiding do it because the settings and copies are complex.

After a closer look I discovered the template name now doesn't have the version number. That means the next time my wish will be granted for it to update. So this time I had to do some cut and paste.
1. Opened the old template config in one window and the new in another then did a little cut and paste.
2. Selected the template tab and copied the changes I had made to template.css and style4.css into CustomCSS module Andy wrote about in the magazine. Worked great! I have to go find some stuff I abandoned because it was to too much trouble to maintain and move it here. All my sites now have this and RokReplacer.
3. Recreated the template copies for custom menu and pages.
4. Tested.
5. Changed to new template as default.
6. Cleaned up by deleting the old template under installer/manage. I also disabled some of the systems templates I never use for a cleaner back-end.
Off to find some of my favorite typography from old templates to add to customcss. Maybe next month Andy will write about how to patch the actual template with a plugin. I'd love to have the logo be a graphic logo, H1 title and slug like RT templates did a few years ago as an option. Wish I could remember which templates did that after reading Andy's magazine article it seems like that would be an easy module to create.

I was wrong! The rt-gantry template still hoses everything as I described in my first post with the most recent version .16. It is very frustrating to end up with 2 templates listed but in the same folder, The default unset, setting reset to default, and duplicates hosed. Why doesn't it cleanly upgrade? I end up deleting it and starting over/
